Enjoy lunch and lively conversation with the art dealer George Hemphill. Founder of Hemphill Fine Arts, which opened in 1993, Mr. Hemphill has 40 years of experience as a curator, art dealer, and consultant. He has served on the boards of directors of DC Arts Center, FotoWeek DC, and Washington Project for the Arts. At HEMPHILL, he has supported and exhibited the work of consequential American artists including Sam Gilliam, William Christenberry, Romare Bearden, Alma Thomas, Renée Stout, Gene Davis, Anne Truitt, and Kenneth Noland. He continues to highlight work by young, cutting-edge, and emerging contemporary artists, including Hedieh Javanshir Ilchi, Julie Wolf, and Linling Lu. Over lunch near his 14th Street gallery, Mr. Hemphill will talk with his guests about the contemporary art world and his years of experience working with art and artists.

14th Street NW Walking Tour with Photographer Michael Horsley

Michael Horsley, who photographed the mean streets of Washington, DC during the 1980’s, will conduct a walking tour of the 14th Street corridor, visiting locations depicted in his vintage photographs. Horsley’s photographs document the gritty streets of Washington during the dark days of crack, crime, and corruption. The tour will start at the corner of 14th Street and Rhode Island Avenue and head to 14th and U streets.

He’ll cover the basics of podcast production including equipment and software recommendations, marketing and audience development, and an overview of podcast distribution options. The workshop is a great opportunity for an artist, writer, small business owner, or other aspiring podcaster to start learning the ropes. Valdez has worked in public radio, for shows like Tell Me More, The Kojo Nnamdi ShowAmerica Abroad, and Latino USA. In his current position with the Panoply network he has worked on The Ezra Klein Show, Vox’s The Weeds, and Our National Conversation About Conversations About Race, among other podcasts.

The Lansburgh’s Notebook Walking Tour

Join curator, writer, and DCAC Managing Director Blair Murphy for a walking tour based on her research for Footprint aka The Lansburgh’s Notebook, an exhibition that took place at Flashpoint Gallery from April 15 – May 6 of this year. Footprint aka The Lansburgh’s Notebook explored the history of arts spaces in downtown DC from the early 1970’s to the present day, with a focus on documenting the names, locations, and years of operation of galleries, non-profits, theaters, dance companies, artist studios, music spaces, and other small-scale arts organizations. The walking tour will include additional details, anecdotes, and stories Murphy unearthed during her research. The tour can be personalized to the participant’s interests, promising a rich experience for DC art scene veterans or curious newcomers.
