The Stabler Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is on the site of a family apothecary business established in 1792 and operated in the Museum’s Old Town Alexandria location from 1805 to 1933. Everything now in the Stabler Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is original in both the first floor Retail Shop and second floor Manufacturing Room—including the ingredients in the bottles, jars, drawers and bins. In addition to making medicines from botanical and mineral ingredients, the owners of the apothecary business also used the natural pigments in the botanicals to make dyes and paints.
The Apothecary Experience will begin with of a tour of the museum, highlighting the use of natural ingredients in the manufacturing of both medicines and paints. Following the tour, participants will use the same paint-making process the Stabler Leadbeater family used to make themselves an Artist Paint Set to take home with them.

#Vote4Pope is a participatory art performance project intended to draw attention to the unequal status of women in the Catholic Church. It is a traveling trunk show of Papal regalia and props. You and three invited guests will come dress up as Pope and pose in a papal-like gilded throne. Participants will don their favorite papal outfit from a display of clothing comprising an array of Pope’s cassocks, stockings, female shoes, hats, and stoles in papal colors (white and red), just as they are for a newly elected Pope in the Room of Tears at the Vatican. You will then pose as Pope and have your photograph uploaded to social media sites and the dedicated website: vote-4-pope.com.
Anyone can participate in #vote4pope. It is an equal opportunity event with– dare we say it– a slight preference for women!
